Pest Control from Self Storage Companies

Something that people do not seem to think enough about when it comes to their self storage checklists is the need for proper pest control from the storage company. This is truly one of the more important things you need to do before you settle on a storage company, in fact, since your items could be adversely affected by the presence of certain pests. And in some cases, there might even be peril for you, especially if the storage facility happens to be harbouring certain species of poisonous spiders (which are always a concern in Australia, of course). It would be dangerous if you un-crated some of your old belongings from the self storage unit after a long period of storage, only to be bitten by a black widow spider hiding out in one of your boxes.

The first thing to do to make sure your storage company uses proper pest control methods is to ask them about it. Get to know what they do, find out if they apply sprays and similar measures to their warehouses. After getting their answers, do your own inspection of the facilities. Look around corners for mouse droppings, ant trails, and scurrying roaches. You definitely do not want to find such things in your storage company’s facilities, so stay away from that company if you do find any of these markers. If you do find a few (just a few, not a lot) dead insects here and there, that might not be too much of a problem. Living ones are off-limits, though.

To be safe, you yourself should do your bit of prevention where this issue is concerned. Be sure to take a close look at boxes that have been in storage a long time before you reach into them or touch them, just in case there is an arachnid or insect hiding out in there that could give you a toxic bite. You also want to check the items and packing materials you use for your belongings before you even send them for self storage to the company’s facilities. This is to make sure no eggs or insects are hiding in there.
